Musical Theatre

Musical theatre is a form of theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting, and dance. The story and emotional content of a musical – humor, pathos, love, anger – are communicated through the words, music, movement and technical aspects of the entertainment as an integrated whole. Although musical theatre overlaps with other theatrical forms like opera and dance, it may be distinguished by the equal importance given to the music as compared with the dialogue, movement and other elements. Since the early 20th century, musical theatre stage works have generally been called, simply, musicals.

At Centre Stage we love our musicals and perform one every other year in the Everyman Theatre in Cork City.  In February 2019 we performed Forever After (which showcased songs from Shrek and Tangled). We have also performed Chicago, Les Miserables, Oliver, Annie, Miss Saigon, Peter Pan, Little Shop of Horrors and many more.  In February 2023, these classes performed as part of 'Matilda: The Musical'.  All of our Musical Theatre classes perform in Cork Opera House at the end of Term 2.

Musical Theatre classes are not currently available to book as they are preparing for our end of year show 'Footwork' in Cork Opera House.  Bookings will open for September 2024 Dance classes in June. To read about the extraordinary people who teach this course (Lily Leahy, Laura Burke, Emily Dwyer, Eimear Sheehan, Kerry Nyhan, Keith Hanley, Amy Burke and Sarah Corcoran) you can click here.

Junior (Senior Infants - 2nd class)

This class introduces students to the elements of West End and Broadway. Incorporating singing, dancing and acting, this class is a must for any young actor who loves to sing and perform! Students will develop and strengthen their singing and also improve their stage presence and confidence. Students work toward annual musicals, class displays and end of year show at the Cork Opera House. This is a great class to give a new student a taste of all three disciplines.  In February 2023, these classes performed as part of 'Matilda: The Musical' in Everyman Theatre, Cork.  Bookings open for September 2024 in June.

Here we further progress our journey into Musical Theatre, exploring musicals such as Matilda, Shrek, Hairspray, Snoopy etc. At Intermediate level more challenging scripts are explored along with some techincal choreography. Staging for each number is executed with clean sharp choreography and strong vocals.  This is a group based class meaning all projects are created to foster the talent within the class as a whole. In the first term we focus on creating a short play with song and dance incorporated in the script. In term two the focus is more on dance and vocals as we prepare a musical medley for out end of year show Footwork in Cork Opera House.  In February 2023, these classes performed 'Matilda: The Musical' in Everyman Theatre, Cork.  Bookings open for September 2024 classes in June.

Our senior Musical Theatre classes aim to stretch and challenge our students to new levels, immersing them in the role of theatre.  We aim to foster self improvement and self confidence as each student progresses to the best of their ability.  In February 2023, these classes will performed as part of 'Matilda: The Musical' in Everyman Theatre, Cork.  Bookings open for September 2024 classes in June.

Testimonials

Lucy has been attending Centre Stage since the age of 4.  I can’t thank the teachers and staff enough for all they instill in our kids; the talent, confidence & camaraderie inside those doors are so important, and it's a privilege for any child to be part of, and something which they’ll carry with them through life.

My daughter Aoibhe Lilly has attended Centre Stage for the past 5 years. The overall experience has been phenomenal. She has always enjoyed the high standard of classes on offer. Centre Stage offers a caring, nurturing environment, where love of arts is encouraged, in a place where children can dance, act, sing, laugh and have fun, making lifelong friends and memories. In Aoibhes own words 'It's my happy place'!

My daughter has been attending Centre Stage School for 4 years. She started with Theatre Tots and moved on ward from there. The musical theatre classes have been instrumental in the development of her self-confidence, as well as her great love for music and dance. The teachers and staff include and encourage all children of all abilities, and each child has a chance to shine. I couldn’t recommend Centre Stage School highly enough. Thank you to everyone there for the amazing work you do!
